Eliyahu Mirlis is known as one of the most significant contemporary artists in New Jersey. He is renowned internationally for his abstract paintings. He was born in 1956 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and is the son of artists. He learned a little bit of painting at a theatre set design studio when he was young. He graduated from New Jersey City University in Fine Arts in 1975, and obtained his BA. In 1980, he exhibited his artworks at the Montclair Art Museum, after graduating from art school. The following year, he held his first individual exhibition in New York. The exhibition, which was heavily influenced by brut art, was how Mirlis found his inspiration to begin his formal art studies. During this time, Mirlis began to produce overlapping layers of materials, creating a unique style of painting. In the 1980s, he exhibited his work in Europe, gaining international recognition. Eliyahu Mirlis' paintings incorporate Amazonian influences. For a long time, he has lived in the Amazon rainforest, exploring new artistic techniques. He utilizes a variety of mediums, textures, luminescences, and colors to create his work. Mirlis' art depicts nature from different viewpoints, making it appear as if it has a strong connection to the Amazon rainforest.
