Oil is a thick paint made by mixing powdered pigments with an oil-based binder. Unlike other paints such as acrylic or watercolor, oil cannot be diluted in water, because having an oily base causes its particles, when it comes into contact, to generate a heterogeneous mixture. It would be the same as adding a tablespoon of water to a cup of oil. This technique has been used by artists since the Middle Ages, where painters combined oil painting with tempera and fresco techniques.
