According to industry evaluations, SQL provides high-quality database support, reaching superior performance, and is one of the most used systems in data centers. The SQL Server DBA performs the task of monitoring the database server, managing SQL Server Instances, SAN storage, and security.


Database administrators (DBA) use software to store and organize data. Your role may include capacity planning, installation, configuration, database design, migration, performance monitoring, security, and troubleshooting, as well as data backup and recovery.


How is SQL Server DBA architecture?


SQL Server is a set of various components developed to meet the needs of data storage and analysis in business applications. Within a database architecture, all information is organized logically and visible to end-users.


How does SQL Server work?


SQL Server works in a client-server architecture, so it supports two types of components: Workstation and Server.


  • The workstation components are installed on the SQL Server operator machine/device. These are just interfaces to interact with the server components. Example: SSMS, SSCM, Profiler, BIDS, SQLEM, etc.

  • The server components are installed on a centralized server. These are services, such as SQL Server, SQL Server Agent, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, SQL browser, and SQL Server full-text search.

  • The monitoring, administration, and operation of SQL Server are also delivered as a service by specialist companies.  



Databases in SQL Server (SQL Server DBA)


There are different types of databases: Master, Model, Msdb, and TempDB.


Master database (Master). The master database contains information related to the server configuration. Without the master database, the server cannot be started. Master or Master stores the metadata information about all other objects (databases, stored procedures, tables, views, etc.) created in the SQL Server.


Model database (MODEL). The model database establishes a template for each database created. When creating a new database, the information is moved to a new one to build default objects such as tables and stored procedures. Mainly, the requirement for a model database is not specific to creating the latest database only. 


msdb database. The msdb database is primarily used by SQL Server Agent to store activities such as SQL server jobs, mail, service broker, maintenance plans, user database backup and system history, replication information, and submission of records. 


TempDB database. From the name of the database itself, its purpose can be identified, and it can be accessed by all users of the instance of SQL Server. TempDB is a temporary location for storing temporary tables (global and local) and temporary stored procedures containing intermediate results during the sorting or processing of queries and cursors.
