Top Five Prop Firms for Beginners in 2026: A Rules-First Comparison

Most beginner guides to proprietary trading rank firms by the size of the account on offer or by the headline profit split. Neither figure explains why a first evaluation ends. New traders rarely fail because they read a market incorrectly. They fail because a drawdown limit behaved differently from how they understood it, because a profit split turned out to start lower than advertised, or because a fee refund they were counting on applied to a different programme.

This comparison ranks five firms on the terms that decide those outcomes, sets out the full published conditions for each one, and states where each firm is weaker.

The short version

  • OneFunded suits a first account best, because it is the only firm here that applies a static drawdown on every plan and refunds the challenge fee at the first payout.

  • The5ers offers unlimited time on every programme and the deepest scaling ceiling, but two of its four routes start the profit split at 50%.

  • FTMO has the longest track record in the industry. Its cheaper 1-Step route uses a trailing maximum loss and does not refund the fee.

  • City Traders Imperium pays every seven days and teaches the most, at the cost of the lowest capital ceiling and fees that are effectively non-refundable.

  • FundedNext is the only firm here that pays during the evaluation, though that 15% share is unavailable in the United States and tied to scale-up eligibility.

What this comparison measures

Five criteria carry most of the weight for a trader taking a first funded account.

  • Drawdown method, before drawdown size. A 10% limit fixed at the initial balance is a different instrument from a 10% limit that trails the equity high. FTMO illustrates the difference inside one firm: its 2-Step challenge uses a static 10% maximum loss, while its cheaper 1-Step uses a 10% end-of-day trailing limit that ratchets up after every profitable day. City Traders Imperium draws the same line between its evaluations and its Instant Funding accounts. A beginner should know which version they bought.

  • The cost of getting it wrong once. Entry fee and refund terms together set the real price of a failed attempt. Every refund here is paid only after passing and reaching a payout, so a failed challenge costs the full fee at every firm in this group. That makes the entry price itself the number to compare: $29 against €79 is the difference between a cheap lesson and an expensive one.

  • What the split actually starts at. Headline splits of "up to 100%" often begin at 50%. The5ers starts at 50% on Hyper Growth and Bootcamp, City Traders Imperium at around 50% on Instant Funding, FundedNext at 70% on Stellar Instant. The base rate matters more than the ceiling for anyone who will not trade for years.

  • Payout mechanics. Cycle length, first withdrawal date and processing time. The spread here is wide: seven days at City Traders Imperium against 21 days before a first withdrawal on two FundedNext programmes.

  • Rule transparency and access to teaching. Rules published in one document, with superseded versions archived and dated, tell a trader what they are buying. A free academy and an active community reduce the number of expensive lessons learned in live conditions.

Two firms that scored well on paper were left out. One had unresolved payout complaints. The other had its public review rating suspended pending a review-integrity investigation, which makes its trader feedback impossible to assess.

1. OneFunded

OneFunded ranks first on the beginner criteria specifically, not on scale. It is the only firm here that applies a static drawdown measured from the initial balance across every plan, with no exception for a cheaper or faster route, and the only one that pays the fee refund at the first payout rather than the third.

Why it works for a first account

  • Static drawdown on every plan, so the loss limit sits where the trader can calculate it before the session starts rather than moving with equity.

  • No time limit on any challenge, which removes the incentive to force trades in a final week.

  • Entry from $29, with the fee refunded at the first payout on Core and Flash, so the cost of a failed first attempt stays low and the cost of a successful one returns.

  • Payouts processed in under an hour on average, the fastest cadence in this group alongside City Traders Imperium.

  • Rules published with the exact formula behind the best-day calculation, and superseded rules archived with the date they changed. That archive is what lets a trader confirm whether a given session breached anything.

Trade-offs

  • The 4.4 out of 5 rating rests on a far smaller review base than FTMO, FundedNext or The5ers.

  • The 90% split and weekly payouts are paid add-ons, so the most attractive headline numbers are not the default configuration.
