Effective Solar Asset Management Strategies for Japan’s PV Market
Challenges and opportunities of a solar fleet that’s both growing and aging
Solarplaza will return to the land of the ever-rising sun for the sixth edition of the Solarplaza Summit Asset Management Japan. This highly-focused event brings together a crowd of local market players and international stakeholders to network and discuss the opportunities and challenges related to optimizing the operational phase of Japanese solar assets.
Japan is one of the world’s oldest and largest solar markets. With nearly 80GW of installed PV capacity, it ranks third globally in terms of scale. In 2021, Japan added 6.5 GW of new capacity, which was still largely fueled by Feed-in Tariff (FIT) projects coming online. As the market is moving towards a post-FIT era, governmental agencies are pushing hard to sustain growth without tariffs. In October 2021, the Japanese government approved a plan to raise the national target for renewable energy in the electricity generation mix to between 36% and 38% by 2030. For solar PV, that would translate to a new target of 118 GW.
To reach these goals, a large number of pressing issues need to be addressed. Land scarcity, grid congestion, and relatively high PV installation costs are considered to be some of the main obstacles in the Japanese solar market. However, as a leading country in innovation, Japan is already applying solutions related to hybrid solar/wind/storage projects, smart grid management, and virtual power plants, which show promising potential for tackling the markets challenges.
As one of the earliest solar markets to reach scale, Japan is home to a solar fleet that includes a significant portion of aging PV projects. Subsequently, it’s crucial to determine the best strategy with regards to the O&M, potential repowering, and ultimately decommissioning, of solar assets.
The event program will feature presentations and panel discussions on these themes and more, to determine where the Japanese PV market will go and assess how this will impact solar asset management strategies and practices in the years ahead.
